1. Your Livejournal username and what it means:
Athers is an old, old university nickname that I acquired through the SU Cricket Club, where I was told that I batted like a certain England cricketer of the time who was nicknamed Athers. It stuck. At about the same time, I signed up for the very original Geocities (before they were owned by Yahoo) and signed up as athers - on account of it being easy for me to remember. When Yahoo bought Geocities out, I was migrated to Yahoo as Athers.Geo (because they already had an athers and I was from Geocities) and as time's gone on, I've dropped the dot.
2. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) how well does your livejournal represent who you actually are?
Hooboy. Well, the journal is basically for me to babble about my writing. As my writing is my life (give or take), I've got to say it's probably about an 8 or 9.
3. How much about your life do you post to lj?
Depends what's up in my life, but I have been known to grouse about various aspects of it and, of course, as I said for 2, writing is my life and this journal is about my writing. So pretty much all of it.
4. Is there anything you refuse to post about?
Yes. I won't touch politics (I grew up in a political household and the last thing I enjoy is political debating; I've also been burned too many times by someone who virtually turned me into a pariah for being on the right of centre, despite the fact that yes, I had reasoned out my position for myself and no, I wasn't just blindly swallowing the BS my father spouts), I won't touch religion (unless, of course, I get any more spam about The Passion of the Christ - you'll need to page back to February or thereabouts for the explanation of that one!) and I very rarely grouse about the paternal unit (mostly because when he's being a butthead [which happens from time to time] my thoughts reduce down to a serious of expletives).
5. On a scale of 1-10 how interesting do you think your own journal is to others?
The writing stuff is probably quite interesting to most of my readers - seeing as that (I think) is what people wander in here for and what it's here for. So probably about a 7 or 8.
6. From who/how did you find out about lj?
weirdweb and honorh were the two people who made me aware of LJ and made me think that it was something I could possibly use.
7. Has anyone ever joined lj because of you?
I *think* that there are at least three people on my flist for whom I was at least a small part of the reason they joined LJ.
8. What proportion of your posts are friends only?
Hm - probably about 5% or just under, and they tend to be posts about dubious/weird emails I've received, often about some of my fanfic swattage. For the most part, I lock those posts because I'm looking for advice as to how to reply and I don't want the person wandering in and seeing that I'm not sure - and this LJ is linked from my ff.net profile, so I know I get quite a few walk-bys from ff.net (*waves to Gauss!*)
9. What is your favorite interest on lj?
Hmm. As you'll see from my profile, I have no interests listed! It's really more about me giving vent to my stream of consciousness rather than anything else.
10. Has anything on lj ever caused you to establish, rethink, or even change your belief or position on something?
Rethink, frequently. Change, not so far. This tends to happen when I'm reading either Customer's Suck or Mock the Stupid, both of which make me more and more convinced that there is no limit to human stupidity, arrogance, bigotry and general brainlessness. (Which is not to say I haven't read thought provoking discussions elsewhere on LJ, just that's where it seems to happen most.)
11. How often do you respond/comment on other peoples journals?
It varies. There are some people who I try to respond to all the time, but not all the posts are subjects I have an opinion on and if I don't have anything to say, I tend not to say it. *grin*
12. Do you prefer to write in your journal or read other journals?
Depends how bored I am and how much work I've got on. I have been known to spend hours and hours just mindlessly reading Customer's Suck...
13. Have you ever had something mean said to you or been stalked, harassed, or got into an argument/flame war on lj (or did it to someone else)?
Well, I did manage to accidentally touch off a flame war on Mock the Stupid, but I didn't intentionally do it, and the flame war was actually started by someone who responded to my post. My post was about an incredibly dumb convo I had with someone while in Philadelphia last November. He didn't appreciate that yes, England has more than one city. (The logic was something like: If you don't live in London, you must live in the countryside; if you don't live in the countryside, you must live near a mine.) To give the whole story some context and to head off people trying to use the "well he wasn't a native speaker" excuse, I explained that 1) I was English and abroad. 2) I was in America, talking to an American native English speaker. The respondee (about the 50th person to respond) complained "I'm so sick of all these 'dumb American' posts! We are not all dumb!". My response (which was largely ignored) was something along the lines of: "I know that; I'm not suggesting all Americans are dumb, just this particular one. I only said he was American so as to make it clear that he was not English." Everyone else proceeded to jump on the respondee quite mightily and she bit back just as mightily and from a 30 post thread, the whole thing ballooned into over a hundred posts, MOST of them either defending me or bitching me out!
14. Have you ever banned someone from your journal?
No. There is one person I might consider banning, but to the best of my knowledge, he's had his internet privaledges revoked for stalking someone. (And I do mean stalk.)
15. Who are your favorite lj friend(s) and why?
I was going to write out a full answer, but to be perfectly honest, it was virtually the whole of my flist (I say virtually because a couple of people on my flist have two journals and I also have a couple of communities/feeds on there) and everyone on my flist has got there by being cooler than cool, all round generally awsome, very nice people and people I've known through their writings elsewhere for varying lengths of time. I have no favourites because you're all my favourites :)
16. How many of your lj friends have you actually met?
Actually, surprisingly many:ganeris, katherine_b, vikkik, donna_k, weirdweb, bigtitch and evildrem.
I'm working on meetingaspartaimee, cmar_wingnut, estirose and freespirit127 at the moment.
Everyone else: I do hope to meet you all at some point, provided you guys want to meet me!
17. Of all of the people on lj you know of, who is the most like you?
Consideringganeris and I frequently finish each other's sentences and/or voice each other's thoughts...I think that's probably the answer!
