First things first, I suppose - and the bit that most people will be interested in - the writing update.
Basically, at the moment, the only story I'm working on is the CSI one, which I'm having a complete and utter blast doing (and which is going to have a really, REALLY ebil cliffhanger towards the end of the piece mwahaha!). For one thing, I think I'm having so much fun because it's something completely new and challenging. I'm not sure how many stories I'm going to end up doing for CSI, but I do have an overall arc in my head for what I'm writing at the moment which, if I can pull it all off, should be a heap of fun too. Then there are a couple of AU ideas (ok, MORE AU than currently!) that are kicking around too which I may or may not do anything with, but they relate to some of the observations (so if you want to know more about them, keep reading!).
Having said that, though, I'm well aware that I have numerous things hanging and dangling in various states of in-complete which I'm going to be making an effort to deal with before the end of the year, so my plans for the final two months of the year are as follows:
1) I'm not doing NaNo this year. I just don't have the mental time and energy required - never to speak of the fact that I don't have even the slightest hint of a plot!
2) I will be doing Yuletide, however - because it's a good way to challenge myself and get a neat story out of it as well. Whether I do any Yule pinch hits once my main story's written is another matter *grin*
3) Difficulties for Francie: I don't think I've actually looked at this since my laptop power cable died back in July. Ooops... I'm going to rectify that this weekend, though whether there will actually be an update this weekend, or whether that will be next weekend, depends on where things are left. My goal for the end of the year here is to just get it regularly moving again - irrc, there's still a bit much of the story to go to actually wrap up before the end of December, but if I get on a roll I may even manage to achieve that!
4) A Woman Alone: Similar situation to point 3, really, with even less excuse as the file isn't on the laptop... Again, I'm going to look over it this weekend and see where I'm at - from memory, though, this one is much, MUCH closer to being done. The goal, then, would be to finish.
5) Isard's Grip - Once more with feeling, really. This is another one I'm going to check over at the weekend, with a view to actually getting a post up by the end of Sunday. Again, from memory, this is pretty close to being finished so finishing before the year's out shouldn't be a problem.
6) Soaring Eagle - Until I have points 4 and 5 wrapped, I'm not going to even try and give this one brain space. Given that points 4 and 5 are (I think) pretty close to being finished, however, brain space will be given in due course. The goal for this one is simply to get it moving again. A little like point 3, I don't think I can wrap it up before the end of the year, but I would like to show people that I haven't completely abandoned it.
7) Original projects, which I will outline over on my DW account later (as in this evening), are going to get a look in once points 4 and 5 have been dealt with (there are, after all, only so many different projects I can successfully juggle!).
8) While I'm doing all THAT, I'm going to be continuing on apace with Red Rain. I have chapter 2 ready for posting (that'll be going up shortly, in fact), while chapters 3 and 4 are two thirds done each. I also have a large measure of the climax and conclusion written up, so this is another one that will be wrapped up by the end of the year.
Think that covers everything - if there's anything else you want to know about, feel free to ask!
Now on to those observations...
I'm now even MORE confused over why s4's "Coming of Rage" is generally recognised in fandom as Nick's first solo DB. I've already noted s2's "Anatomy of a Lye", to which I can now add s3's "Random Acts of Violence". Puzzling.
Has anyone else noticed how it's always the girls who get to use the power tools on this show? I don't quite know why this amuses me so much, but it does.
s5's "Mea Culpae" was an interesting idea, for sure, but if the idea was to hurt Grissom with the split shift, I really think Ecklie missed a trick by leaving Sara on the Graveyard shift.I think what I'd have done would have been to put Warrick and Sara onto Swing, leaving Grissom with Nick and Greg (and Sophia) and leaving it very, VERY much easier for Ecklie to then actually get rid of Sara (or making it vastly harder for Grissom to stop him, at least).
While I'm on the split shift subject, I have to wonder: WTH happened to the rest of the Swing crew? Ecklie mentions moving the Swing supervisor to Days, which implies there was a pre-existing Swing shift. Where did they go? Why was no mention of them even made? (I know why they wouldn't necessarily have been shown, cause hey; there's only so much screen time to go around, but it would have been good to give them a mention at least!)
And lastly (for now), is it me or are there a couple of plot holes in "Grave Danger"/early s6 relating to "Grave Danger"? I mean, no.1: Are we really expected to believe that the person sneaking up behind Nick is Walter Gordon? *REALLY*? no.2: Why did no-one follow up on the anonymous 911 call? If not in the episodes themselves, later, when the tape was found and the extra voice discovered? Sure, it could have been inconclusive or something, but at least mention it! no.3 What would have happened if the officer at the scene hadn't had such a weak stomach?

Date: 2009-10-23 06:24 pm (UTC)For me, it's not so much a shortage of time - if I *REALLY* wanted to do NaNo, I'd be able to find a way (particularly considering my current work situation) - so much as a lack of solid ideas. If I'd MAAAAAAAAYBE got a little further with the CSI story I mentioned, one of the potential follow ups is definitely novel-sized, but I very much don't want to get into writing that before I know I can wrap up the current story and the linking bits.
And I think that would apply even if I was more active in the local NaNo scene (I'm not even sure there IS a local NaNo scene in these parts - seem to remember looking last time out and finding the nearest group was in Essex which is only near in the sense of "well it's closer than Scotland"...), although given I'm still going to be writing quite a bit through November, I'd probably still turn up to the hypothetical write-ins, just...unofficially!
