*grin* The phrase is (I think) an American phrase that, pretty much, has the same connotations as "for fun". At least (she adds before someone contradicts her) that's always been the context I've seen the phrase in.
I've always said and heard "shits and giggles" the "and" can be shortened to 'n' if you so desire.
I've heard it used for a couple different meanings. Mostly "for the entertainment factor", "for the hell of it" or "because I'm so bored that I need something to do and this is as good a thing as any"
