Memes and Such
Feb. 15th, 2006 12:52 pm1. When John F. Kennedy was shot (22/11/1963)
Mum was in a needlework lesson, I believe. I, needless to state, hadn't been drawn or thought of at this point!
2. When Mt. St. Helens blew (18/5/1980)
Eighteen months old and watching Simon Groom on Blue Peter who did a special report on it. (Yes, I DO have an obscenely long memory)
2a. When the Falklands War was declared (02/04/1982)
Three and a half - and I remember this pretty vividly cos when mum heard our prayers, we added a special one in for the members of the British task force.
3. When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (28/1/1986)
Just seven and watching it on Newsround.
4. The Hillsborough disaster. (15/4/1989)
Ten and a bit - and while I remember it well, I can't remember whether I was actually watching the match, or if I just remember the news broadcasts about it in the aftermath.
5. When the Berlin Wall fell (7/11/1989)
Coming up to being 11 (god having your birthday right at the end of the year sucks!) - and dad was watching Sky News. He called mum, my brother and me into the room and got us to see it. So yup, saw this one live too.
6. When Nelson Mandela was released from gaol. (11/2/1990)
Coming up to being 12. Again, I remember it well - I may or may not have seen it live, though.
7. When Thatcher resigned (22/11/1990)
Eleven days nearer to 12 than in question 6 - and this I vividly remember because it was in the lead up to Desert Storm. And yes, I saw her famous "We're leaving Downing Street for the last time" broadcast live.
8. When the Gulf War began (16/1/1991)
Just 12! I can remember being a little peterbed by all this. As much as I remember the Falklands' War, this was the first war I actually understood and I knew what the implications could be - particularly when the Scuds started landing in Israel.
9. When Princess Di was killed (31/8/1997)
Time for a really odd answer: I was 18 and I was coming downstairs that Sunday morning when mum came out of the living room and told me. It was a really odd day. No adverts. I ended up watching Warwickshire vs somebody in the Sunday League and there were no between-over ad breaks. Weird.
10. When Omagh was bombed (15/8/1998)
19 and on the way to 20. Most likely, I was at the county ground, working, when this happened. I don't remember it exactly, so much as remember the aftermath.
11. When Bush was first announced President (7/11/2000)
Coming up to being 22 and I had just got up, intending to go to work, when I was acosted by the paternal unit (who'd watched the results come in live) who told me.
12. When terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center (11/9/2001)
Coming up to being 23, and I was at work. A friend in Australia emailed me, which put me onto the Sky News website. Dad was at home and he was actually watching Sky News as the first plane hit and both he and my brother saw the second plane hit. Very, very weird day.
13. When the Queen Mother died (30/3/2002)
I actually don't remember where I was. (I was 23 at the time) Dad was watching Sky News, though. I was going to a hockey match when Princess Margaret died - which was about a month earlier.
14. When Columbia disintegrated during re-entry over Texas. (1/2/2003)
23 and I'd just come in from somewhere (work most likely).
And in other news: The boss is back. This means technical problems cease to be MY problem. PHEW.
