It's not often that a film really touches me completely and gives me goosebumps. This one has done that and more.

It's called "Hotel Rwanda".

I was going to write about the film. Describe it, pick it apart and offer up the history and my opinions. But ultimately, I can't do that this time.

It's not pleasant viewing. It's not easy viewing. But it is a film that needs to be seen. If you see no other film in the rest of this year, see this one. You won't regret it.

That is an amazing film, isn't it? I spent most of it crying in just pure shock.

I showed this to my journalism students. It was "over the heads" of some of them, unfortunately, but others "got it." It is excellent and, to tell you the truth, almost too restrained, could have been a bit more graphic, and that's not something I usually say about any film.

It certainly could have been, but I'm glad that they *did* restrain it because had they not, all people would have remembered about it was the blood/guts/violence and as important as that side of it is, the really important story is showing how strong Paul was and how weak and frankly pathetic the western world was.

I've described this as being about "the African Oscar Schindler." What struck me particularly is that Paul Rusesabagina was exactly the right man at the right place at the right time. The specific people skills he had spent his career developing were exactly those that he needed to be able to call upon to keep such a large group safe for so long.
