It's one of those mysteries in international cricket: Why can Australia really NOT chase a moderate target for victory? Set them 400 and they'll get them (just ask Pakistan). Set them between 100 and 300 and they'll make a mess (just ask...well, actually, most test playing nations!) I'll grant you that they've still got two wickets in hand, and that Brett Lee and Mike Kasprowicz know how to hold a bat (for the first time in the match, Glenn McGrath's absence is going to actually work for them, there!) but they still want over 100.

The shame of it is that if this were Sunday night, I'd actually get to be in Edgbaston to actually see what happens. And at least then my random squeaks and squeals on each wicket wouldn't arouse quite so much amusement!

In many ways, I'm very like my grandfather, who was a complete cricket nut. He was a Gloucestershire member for a time and though he'd stopped going by the time I was born, he used to go to see quite a few matches - when we cleared out his room after he died, we found score cards going back to the 1950s, some with signitures on. It was definitely from him that I got my love of the game, and my excitability over England taking wickets. On one occasion, he was at home for lunch during one of the year's test matches. England were bowling and by virtue of play going on, he was permitted (by my grandmother) to sit in the living room and watch play, while eating. England took a wicket. Granddad leapt to his feet...and promptly upset his dinner all over the carpet! Soon after that, my grandmother purchased a light table for him to use to prevent it from happening again (you note, she didn't try to ban him from watching while eating!).

In many ways, I'm sad that Granddad died before this England side really got going, because he'd have loved to have watched today's play. On the other hand, as his memory had mostly gone by the end, he might just have spent the entire afternoon insisting that the live cricket was actually reruns because it was raining...

On the creatures front, we're clearing out the bother's bedroom (he's moved out and we're prepping for redecorating) and we've discovered the Zoids (anyone reading this remember them?), the box of toy soldiers, my train set (yes, the girl in the family had the train set!) and a veritable pride of dust lions. No two ways about it: The bother was a complete and utter slob!

And finally, my new chest of drawers has come. They are beautiful - and they have that wonderful sawdusty smell that non-flat-pack new furniture has, and I've FINALLY got enough drawer space for my clothes. (Watch me now fill them...!)
