Losing Twenty Twenty to England I could understand: It's a short form of the game that Australia doesn't play and it does take a little adjustment.
Losing to Somerset was a little more inexplicable: On the other hand, the bulk of Somerset's runs were scored by their two overseas players Sanath Jayasuriya and Graeme Smith.
But losing to Bangladesh, by five wickets and with four balls to spare...
It beggers belief. This is Australia. They are world's number one - and they're playing like the England side of the early 90s. The bowling is below par (I saw Glenn McGrath go for nine in an over. Twice. That doesn't happen!), they're dropping catches and missing the stumps (this from the team who inovated fielding in the 90s!), and the batting is...well, dodgy.
To the Australians on my flist: What the 'eck's gone on?!
Australia play England tomorrow here in Bristol (no, I'm not going - didn't manage to get a ticket cos I WAS going to go to Edgbaston instead...and never got round to ordering tickets; I'm an idiot). I can see two results now; either Australia are going to finally come back hard and absolutely cream us or (and I have to say more likely) we're going to demoish Australia.
Has the world gone topsey turvy?

Date: 2005-06-18 06:13 pm (UTC)Darn - why'd we have have to be having a 8 hour rehearsal tomorrow. We'll catch up to lunch probably - but after that we're going to miss it.
Ben'll be happy at today's result though.

Date: 2005-06-18 07:09 pm (UTC)First, Im absolutely delighted for them. After their test probs, its good to know they can at least progress through the one day game, and hopefully this will give them confidence and courage elsewhere, even if it takes a while longer.
Second, you have to love the classy line from Jonathan Agnew: 'It's hysterical isnt it.' No offense meant to any Aussies, but let us revel in some giggles please!
Third. We know Australia is an excellent team, we dont need that spelled out, but this is just a one day game. The Ashes have yet to begin, and Im sure they are going to be even more determined now.
Tomorrow will be incredibly interesting. How will the Aussies react, can/will England take a advantage? And finally are you going to the match Ray?

Date: 2005-06-18 07:19 pm (UTC)Having Sky, I didn't hear Aggers on the subject (instead, I got to hear Darren Lehman say "They'll improve tomorrow; I hope." - actually, I think that might just have been the most telling remark on the match all day. Lehman isn't convinced they're going to get any better!)
As for Bangladesh, I'm very pleased for them. I have no complaints at their having ODI full status because they can and DO compete at that level.
As for tomorrow: As I said, I can see two results. THey bounce back and wipe the floor with us or we destroy them. I don't see the match going down to the wire at all. Of course, this IS rather assuming the weather doesn't have a say in matters and last I saw, the forecast for this part of the world tomorrow is rather on the ropey side...

Date: 2005-06-18 09:24 pm (UTC)As for missing it, I'm not too sad because it does, at least, avoid me running into the catering staff - most of whom I know and who frequently [and embarrassingly] insist I get free drinks!

Date: 2005-06-18 11:15 pm (UTC)Hang on! What am I saying!...
Guess I'm just as thrown as the average Australian.
And then again; in 97, we won the one day series AND the first test (for surreal, you can't really beat that first test of the series in 97 - Australia all out for under 150...) and you still wrapped the Ashes up by the end of the fifth test...and as everyone knows, it's the Ashes that really count.
