Be Careful What You Wish For...
Mar. 27th, 2005 10:23 pmWow. I wasn't *quite* expecting so many responses to that little challenge. On the other hand, it's given me an excuse to actually do some thinking today. So...
One small disclaimer first: In a couple of cases, where people have asked for very similar and/or related things I've put the drabbly bits together (and in one case, combined them).

Len and Reg is one of the great CS debates. The great problem with it is that EBD expects us to swallow the relationship despite barely giving it any book time to develop. Poor Reg is, essentially, a plot device to make sure that Len gets her happy ending. But, at the same time, there are the little hints in the last eight or so books that suggest EBD was trying to make him real. Ultimately, she – and Len and Reg – ran out of time.

You have to feel some sympathy for Spike. Each and every single time he and Buffy hit a place where they're actually friends, something screws it up and usually leaves him bleeding. On the face of it, they should be a good match, but rather than Buffy reinforcing Spike's good side – his ability to care – Spike just magnifies Buffy's self-destructive side. He takes her drinking, he drags her down into his darkness and from there, there was only one way to go – and it wasn't pretty.

Willow and Xander have been friends since their youngest days and know each other intimately. Their relationship could have moved to romantic, but they never took that step and instead, they have a friendship strong enough that it could – and has – threatened their romantic attachments. It's a friendship that's endured trial and tribulation; it's survived Xander's family and Willow nearly ending the world. It's the one relationship in the Scooby Gang that ended up stronger than it started and it's the one relationship that will still be there come hell and high water.

By nature, Duncan is a brooder. He wears his heart on his sleeve and he's very open to being hurt by the people he cares about. He needs people like Amanda and Fitzcairn in his life to remind him that life is not all about loss and that there are fun times to be had. Both have got him into trouble – whether it be robbing banks in the roaring twenties or blowing up the Houses of Parliament - but both have made sure that whatever else he's done, Duncan's certainly had fun!

Joe and Methos have a great deal in common. While Duncan views the world very much in black and white terms – either something is good or it's evil – Joe and Methos both know that really, the world is actually painted in shades of grey. Joe views Methos with almost paternal fondness and, to an extent, no matter how many times Methos demonstrates his age to Joe, Joe still sees him as someone to be protected while Methos sees in Joe an enthusiasm for history and truth that he can respect.

Kronos is the ex who just can't admit it's over. Methos dumped him over two thousand years ago and still Kronos won't admit it.
OK, I admit, I was going to write more but those two sentences so perfectly summed it up that I didn't think I could actually improve on it! If you want to submit another pairing/friendship be my guest!

C3PO and R2D2 are very much the odd couple. One's tall, humanoid and fussy; the other is short, cylindrical and efficient. You would have thought that R2D2 would have ditched the protocol droid long since and vice versa, but when push comes to shove, R2D2 will always come back for his partner and C3PO will always return the favour because at the end of the day, however much they irritate one another, they need one another.

Billy and Jason are a classic case of opposites attract. Jason's the jock and the martial artist; Billy's the genius scientist. By rights, they shouldn't have been more than passing acquaintances, but by Jason's basic decentness and the circumstances they found themselves in, they ended up being close friends. Jason's strength bolstered Billy's courage while Billy's smarts and knowledge helped Jason's leadership in those early days of the team and in every sense of the word, they were partners.
By comparison, Tommy and Billy weren't partners. They were friends, certainly, but Tommy's need for validation and reassurance prevented him from clicking in quite the same way with Billy as he did with Jason and Kim. In essence, Tommy took Billy's place within the team and Billy became relegated to the position of the team brain only.
Tommy and Jason, however, were partners in an even bigger way than Jason and Billy. They complete each other in a way that very, very few people do. Theirs is a relationship built on the back of a mutual respect for each other's skills and the way their respective strengths bolster their respective weaknesses. Jason provides Tommy with at least some of the strength to overcome what Rita did to him; Tommy provides Jason with someone he doesn't have to hold back with.

To say Wes and Eric had unresolved issues is to redefine the phrase. Wes saw Eric as a curiosity at school; Eric saw Wes as a spoilt rich kid with no merits. Neither truly saw each other as a proper person until they found the common ground of their Ranger status. At that point, they realised that they had far more in common than the inconsequential details of their backgrounds and a friendship was forged between them that runs as deep as any brotherhood.

Wes and Alex have a strange relationship. They're very different people, living in different centuries, who have only two things in common: The woman they both love and the fact that by some cosmic quirk, they share DNA. The former should, by rights, have prevented any kind of friendship, but during their only meeting what they ended up with was, if not friendship, certainly mutual respect and understanding.
