I've been the victim of credit card fraud.

I logged onto my card account this afternoon to discover four transactions that I know I haven't made. None for more than $10 (they were all American based) - and three out of the four were for the princely sum of $1. Not massive sums by any means (particularly when you factor in the exchange rate!), BUT, still sums I hadn't spent.

So I've just spent the last twenty minutes on the phone to card services getting the charges reversed and the card cancelled. Which was NOT how I wanted to spent some of my Sunday afternoon. Still, better done than left alone.

Oh, and the bother's just come in: He thinks he's broken his ankle. Again.

You, too, huh? *hugs*

Happened to me a couple of years ago, to the amount of $75. Luckily, my credit card company caught the attempt and contacted me; seems they tried it twice before until they got the expiration date correct. THAT was what alerted the nice folks at my CC company. Needless to say, I hadn't done the transaction, so it never went through, but I STILL had to cancel the card and get a new one. Good thing it was on a weekday; there's no way I could've taken measures on a weekend.

I guess some jerk copied down the information in one of those places (a restaurant, most likely) where they wander off with the credit card and return with the slip to sign. Grrr.

I'm grateful for 24 hour banking, that's for sure.

As far as how they got my details is concerned, I'm at a loss. The card wasn't one I tended to use online - in fact, I haven't used it in about three weeks and it's been in my wallet the whole time. All I can figure is someone got lucky at playing guess the card number.

It's happened to me too... Someone put through several hundred dollars of charges against my card in New Orleans, where I've never even been. Luckily the card company thought something was suspicious and called me. I had to fill out forms and get the card replaced. In my case, I think the info was taken when I used the card at a local store, but there was no proof.

It's lucky you were on top of things and caught this, they could have been testing the waters before a larger charge.

Parents

This happened to my parents in December. They had $5000 put on a credit card that they haven't used in 3 or 4 years on airplane tickets on the British Airways. My brother was saying it was my fault and I told him that I think someone would have missed me if I had taken off. But anyway, they tried to use it again to buy musical instruments and this time the credit card company got suspicious and only approved them of a $1. The thing that makes this crazy is that my parents never called the number and got the card activated and the card was in our house. So you never know...

OH GAH!!!!

I'm sorry - what a pain. Just glad it's not more money. But it's the principle of the thing.

Have a hug {{{Rach}}}
