Busy?

Hm - depends how you define busy, I guess.

Had something of an abortive shopping trip (I was after a pine box to put my photographs in, all I could find was a tacky looking object that probably required a staple gun to assemble it [have I mentioned how I hate flatpack furniture?]), managed to successfully half edit two and a half chapters of Shadow Games (why half edit? because the other half of the comments weren't with me, so I could only modify the comments I did have) and watched history being made by the England cricket team. (For the Australians reading this: Yes, I know we've only beating the West Indies and New Zealand this summer, but this is the longest run of unbeaten tests for England in, like, forever - please let me have this one moment; I dare say normal service will be resumed when you lot show up over here next summer...)

Then, this evening, I've been having a girlie chips-n-dip-n-baileys evening (except I skipped the baileys on account of having had to swallow a handful of ibuprofen courtesy of combined headache and back ache [not only was shopping abortive, it was also painful...]) and watching movies. Or, well, I watched ONE movie (the excellent Sliding Doors) and watched all the special features on the Bourne Identity (though I have seen the Bourne Identity already [come to that, I've seen Sliding Doors, too])...and promptly got a couple of Shadow Games-like plot bunnies. Which I can't use because they're direct cribs from the Bourne Identity (and plagiarism is a bad move). I also got some more information from the CIA advisor to The Recruit (which I can use for SG as and where required :)).

Tomorrow, my aim is to try and get as much of SG editted as possible, but as I also have Dangerous Minds (another very good film) and The Transporter (ooh - mindless and probably silly violence - yay!) to watch...so we'll see.

BTW Apart from the film of To Kill A Mocking Bird, does anyone on my f'list have any film recs? I've pretty much caught up all the films I've been meaning to see in the last ten years (!!) so I'm ready for some more. (NB It's probably not a good idea to recommend out and out comedies to me, my flat comedy setting is broken.)

As I settle into a junk food and lite beer evening of my own... (sorry to hear about the head and back ache... :(

I liked Sliding Doors a lot too, btw. I can offer recommendations for super-hero movies, not too surprisingly for anyone who knows me. My taste tends to run to melodrama, larger-than-life characters, and accurate portrayals. Of course, you've probably seen most or all of them already.

Excellent:
Darkman (Wasn't a huge hit, but in my opinion excellent. Very moody and violent.)
Robocop (I think he counts as a superhero. First one was the best.)
Superman I
X-Men I
Spiderman I (Except the ending, which I didn't like for some reason.)

Very good:
The Shadow (Alec Baldwin. Again not a big hit, but a great movie.)
Superman II
Robocop II
X-Men II
Spiderman II
The Crow

Good:
The Rocketeer (Relatively obscure, but a great-looking period piece, and some exciting action.)
Blade
Spawn
Unbreakable (I know it didn't do well, but I thought it was really interesting.)
Flash Gordon (Not Shakespeare, but it's entertaining.)
The Hulk

Not exactly good, but if you're in the mood...
Captain America (A really really dumb movie, but lots of great-looking guys in sharp Italian suits.)
Judge Dread (Equally dumb, but entertaining in a bizarre way.)
Daredevil (Maybe I'm being hard on it - but I got bored by the end. Still, Ben Affleck looks great in the suit.)
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (Some good visuals and nice action, but the plot is confusing and the characters are unappealing.)

You'll notice I haven't mentioned any of the Batman movies. I can't be objective, since I found Rubber-Suit-Man ridiculous to look at, many of the characterizations not true to the original, and generally didn't like this interpretation of my heroes at all. I'll admit the first one was a fairly good movie.

Worthy of honorable mention:
Don't know if you're into cartoons at all, but the feature-length versions of the animated Batman series were very good. I liked 'Subzero' very much. Didn't see 'Mask of the Phantasm' but heard it's good.
Same for the animated Justice League series. The only feature-length one I've seen is 'Star Crossed', and it was terrific.

*grinning* Exactly the sort of movies I watch :) I've seen all of the ones you rec as excellent (and own them all barring Robocop and Superman I). Of the very good list, I haven't seen The Crow so I shall look out for that. Of the good, I LOVE "Rocketeer" (who couldn't resist Timothy Dalton as the swave, sophisticated bad guy?! *grins*) and I can recite large chunks of Flash Gordon (we were kids when it first came out on home video - we watched it many times!). I don't know that I've seen Spawn all the way through, but I've certainly read the movie's novelisation and seen enough of it to know I enjoyed it. I'll have to look out for Blade, Unbreakable and The Hulk though. On the "if you're in the mood" list, I'll have a look out for Captain America; I did enjoy Daredevil (though there are certain lack-of-logic bits), I wasn't so keen on Judge Dread and I have to say LXG really didn't grab me when I saw a preview for it.

I'll also have a look out for the cartoons you mentioned - though they might be a little harder to get hold of here.

You should definitely see The Crow; it's got great dark, moody, violent, tragic atmosphere (even more so because of Brandon Lee's death during filming). And the hero's name is Eric.

Don't know if you realize one of your reviews of 'Without Love' picked up on that. (In The Crow, the hero is named Eric and a young girl he's taken under his wing [hah! unintentional pun!] is named Sarah.)

Oooooooooooohhhhhhh! Is THAT what she was on about! It puzzled the wassits out of me totally. I was sort of vaguely aware that Brandon Lee's character was called Eric, but it was one of those things that hadn't entirely registered with me. Obviously it registered a bit more with my subconscious, judging by the character names in Without Love!
