Writing Exercise 3
Feb. 7th, 2007 05:52 amPrompt: I thought I heard a noise...
"I thought I heard a noise."
He looked at the woman seated next to him on the couch. "A noise?" he echoed.
"Yes; a noise. Outside," she confirmed. "It sounds like someone's out there."
He sighed. "Why would someone be out there? We live miles from anywhere."
"I don't know," she answered. "But I heard a noise, I'm sure of it. You should go check."
He sighed again. THat was the problem. She could ask him to do anything and he'd go and do it. He levered himself up off the sofa and went to the front door. Upon opening it, he peered out into the nighttime darkness.
There was no-one there.
The garden was as calm and still as you could expect...
...wait. What was that? There, by the laurel bush; movement.
He peered and strained against the darkness, struggling to make out what it was but to no avail. He finally called, "Who's there?"
For a moment, nothing happened. The laurel bush continued to move apparently of its own accord. Then something started to force its way through. He found his heart beat rising and his mouth drying; what if it was a murderer or some other evil being? What if...
"Meow," said the nighttime visitor.
