Linear Writing...
Jul. 30th, 2006 03:36 pmI've said it before, I'm going to say it again: One day, I aspire to write in a linear fashion.
It's not to say I don't at least halfway enjoy writing at different bits of the timeline at once (there is a perverse sense of enjoyment to be gained from it), but I know how trying it is to keep up with my thought process (and there's plenty of folks who read this LJ who've had the unenvious position of playing editor to my writing for whom there isn't enough chocolate [both virtual and real] for putting up with me).
Take my current endevour. On the face of it, the story I should be working on is The Coming Storm. It's the first in the series, it sets up all the later events (well, most of them, anyway!) and it introduces most of the central players. At a stretch, the vignette/snippet that follows on from The Coming Storm's also not a bad idea - seeing as it's something that'll be posted only a little later than the last bit of The Coming Storm (and just once in a while, it's nice to be ahead of myself!).
But, in the last week, I've bounced from The Coming Storm to the fourth story in the series (for which I have the first part written, but I keep needing to tweak it so's to make sure I'm not contradicting myself), to the third story in the series (for which I've written the final scene and the opening scene!), to the fifth story (I have a couple of random scenes sketched out), to the vignette/snippet stuff (two of which are now finished) to a random snippet that has no story and is set a good ten/fifteen years prior to The Coming Storm! And somewhere, in amidst all that lot, I have even managed a little bit on the final installment of The Coming Storm...
*sigh* Like I said. One day, I aspire to write in a linear fashion...
