I mentioned yesterday that our mailserver was misbehaving extremely badly. Well. Today, it looks as if our firewall has exploded, imploded or otherwise ceased to work. What does this mean? Well, 1) No work email for us AT ALL [previously we were getting mail but in spasms], OR for our clients (since most of said email goes via our servers). 2) We have no FTP access to the webserver - so we can't fix problems with websites or, basically, do any of the work we'd be doing under normal circs. 3) I am willing to bet that we're going to find out that whatever's gone phut with the firewall is the overall reason for the mailserver problems.

I have now phoned our hosting tech support once (Tuesday) to report the initial problem. Someone did manage to phone me back then to say they'd rebooted the firewall and didn't everything look as if it was working now (um, no, that would be because I kicked the server).

I phoned again yesterday morning. They promised to investigate it further and call me back by 12pm. I gave them until 12:30pm. No call. I was then out of the office all afternoon (which I'd told them I would be.)

I called their emergency number last night at 10:30pm and got them to reboot the server. That, at least, was a successful call - once the poor guy had found our server amidst the various others!

I rebooted the server when I got in this morning, and then phoned tech support as soon as their lines opened. They asked me for a screen grab of the error messages (which I've researched and come up with the suggestion that I've got a problem on the firewall with SMTP proxy sessions) which I emailed them - from my home account (that way, if they hit reply, I stand a cat in hell's chance of getting it) - and they promised me that someone would call me back. No call.

At 10:30am, the problem cropped up again, I rebooted the server and then all hell broke loose. Half way through the server rebooting, my PC bluescreened (this is not connected to the other problems, I hasten to add; my PC is here in Bristol, the server and firewall are in Cheltenham). I rebooted, checked the server had come back up (which it had) and tried to log back into the firewall...and nothing. I double, triple and quadruple checked I was typing the password correctly (I was), then called support again. The guy I spoke to this time, promised to escalate the call and get someone from the right department to give me a call. Seeing as this is a firewall being unavailable, as you can tell from my opening paragraph, this is a fairly major issue. It's now been twenty minutes since I called. Still no firewall and, surprise surprise, no call back.

They have until 11:30 to actually get someone onto this - and back to me. Then I'm either going to start breaking heads or burst into tears. Both, at this point, would make me feel better.

And when the boss gets back, I am having a day off.

I vote for breaking heads option, preferably with photographs and soundtrack.

The breaking heads option IS tempting, I do have to admit (and ooh, lookitthis it's 11:30 and surprise surprise, no one has called me - and surprise surprise, we've still got an AWOL firewall).

Once I've been to the little girls' room, we'll see what I can do...

Depending on how this phonecall goes, I may want those whips myself...
